'In Memoriam' by the PIGL

When Oma migrated from Indonesia to Holland, she became a member of the PIGL and of the PJC, two protestant organisations who supported Dutch-Indonesian migrants, helping them to buildup a new life. Opa also was a member, that's how the two of them met and how they got married. Later on Oma and Opa became active members, currently Opa is the vice-chairman of the PIGL. After all these years they still meet every week! Today the PIGL organised an 'In Memoriam' to remember Oma and they invited all Oma's children as well. Most of the people have known Oma for over 45 years, many knew her already before Oma met Opa and certainly before any of their children were born. We were moved by the stories they told us and by the old pictures of Oma that they showed us. Of course there was Indonesian food and live piano music and singing.

Afterwards, we went to the Dutch-Indies monument. Finally we went to Oma's grave to tell her how we had remembered her ...

While searching track of my family business in Indonesia I came across you website and admired it. My Grandpa migrated from Italy to Indonesia in 1925, openend with his brother an Ice Cream factory your familiy patronised during the Java trip. My father grew up in Surabaya and attended all Dutch schools there. I was born there and carry tender childish memories of my house next to the Ice Cream Factory. I went back myself a few years ago to have a look and settle memories with phantasy... It's great to find a family like yours. In mine, Italy, Indonesia, Dutch culture, friends in The Netherlands, Indonesian cooking go along very well. Have a nice life! Roberto Zangrandi
