What happened...

Oma and Opa had been on a vacation to Turkey. It was there that she first felt serious pain in her chest. Then she got back to Holland, it was a very sad Easter weekend. It was Noa's birthday, but also the first time that Oma Hedwig was taken into the cardiac care unit of the Westeinde hospital in The Hague, it turned out that she had had a heart infarct. And we were very sad because my Opa Frans passed away the same weekend.

In only 2 months time, Oma Hedwig got 4 heart infarcts and was taken into hospital many times. Medical examinations were carried out, but the end results were not good. In an appointement with all of us, the cardiologist told us that it was not possible to take away the cause of Oma's heart problems. Her arteries were blocked severly, one of her heartvalves was not functioning properly and the heart itself was not strong enough to endure a by-pass operation. They were going to treat her with medicine, and in theory Oma could still have a decent life for a considerable time.

We all hoped for the best, and it looked like Oma was doing reasonably well. She wasn't physically fit, we couldn't take long walks, but when she was sitting on the couch she would talk and laugh and enjoy playing with her grandchilderen just like everything was fine. Everyone was spending as much time with Oma as possible. On 22 July it was Oma and Opa's 42nd weddinganiversary, which we celebrated that day in a little restaurant in Bergschenhoek. We are used to go to this restaurant for special occassions, Oma loves the beautiful lake. We were all there and we took family pictures with all of us. The Sunday after that we had dinner together, as we do every Sunday. Usually we do it at Opa and Oma's place, but this time it was in our house. Oma was there, she was doing really fine that day and stayed until late, sitting in the garden, enjoying the evening sun under the palm trees.

Then it became Thursday, the 31st of July. In the evening my daddy and I went to visit Oma as we did regularly of course. Oma and I were playing with my cars, she was reading me a story, we were singing a song, just like any other visit. Then we went home again, but next morning it turned out that Oma had had a very bad night again. The house doctor had ordered an ambulance to take her to the emergency unit of the Langeland hospital in Zoetermeer, she had had another heart infarct.

We all came to the hospital, Oma was not doing good at all. She had to go to the Intensive Care, but because it was full they were going to transport her to another hospital. But tante Wanda, who is currently an Ambulance nurse, knows everyone in the Langeland ziekenhuis, especially the people from the Intensive Care unit, where she used to work. She managed to make an arrangement with the doctors so Oma could stay in Zoetermeer, tante Wanda would then personally take care of Oma and give her all medical treatmeants herself. Suddenly, the nurses came running outside and urged us to go to Oma, she was doing really, really bad.

Surrounded by Opa and her childeren, Oma Hedwig went into a deep, deep sleep, deeper and deeper and deeper and deeper...
